NFL rumors: Insider dumps cold water on Commanders getting Brandon Aiyuk amid 49ers drama

The NFL offseason has mostly wound down after free agency and the NFL Draft finished up, but there are still some intriguing dominoes that are yet to fall. One of the biggest names among that group is wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk as the San Francisco 49ers continue to try to find a trade partner for the star wide receiver.

The Washington Commanders have been a popular rumored landing spot for Aiyuk for a number of reasons. The Commanders are in desperate need of help at wide receiver around Terry McLaurin, and Aiyuk has a connection with quarterback Jayden Daniels dating back to their time at Arizona State together.

Unfortunately, it’s no forgone conclusion that the Commanders are going to end up with Aiyuk on their roster. On a recent episode of Yahoo Sports Daily, NFL insider Jordan Schultz made sure everyone pumps the brakes on the Aiyuk-Commanders buzz.

“Obviously, he’s not in the building, and they don’t really have to do anything right now,” Schultz said. “It’s been like that for a while. I remember asking someone in that building, ‘Hey, do you think you’ll trade him during the draft?’ And it’s been the same answer: ‘Maybe, probably not, who knows?’

“That’s what it’s felt like. He won’t be there next season, and at some point, you’d have to assume he’ll probably be released because everyone knows he’s not going to be there.

“So why would you trade for him? There’s an obvious connection to Washington because of Jayden Daniels, Arizona State and that relationship. But I’m still not convinced that’s going to happen, either.”

A trade for Aiyuk seems more and more unlikely at this point because of exactly what Schultz said. However, if Aiyuk does end up as a free agent, it’s unclear exactly what type of shape he will be in after suffering a serious knee injury in 2024 and not playing or practicing at all during the 2025 season. Whether the Commanders want to be the team that finds that out or not remains to be seen.
