The Seattle Seahawks sale is not official yet, but incoming owner Vinod Khosla has teased a change that would make him instantly popular with his players.

Khosla, worth an estimated $13.8bn, announced in July that his family would head the new ownership group of the defending Super Bowl champions.

An NFL record $9.612 billion sale has been reported, and the estate of Microsoft co-founder Paul G. Allen — which has owned the team since his death in 2018 — will soon hand over control.

“We are honored to be entrusted as the next stewards of the Seattle Seahawks,” Khosla said last month, on behalf of the Khosla family.

“We look forward to building on the winning legacy Paul Allen created and to earning the trust of the Seahawks organization and fans everywhere.”

After he announced news of the purchase, Khosla added that he would make ‘no other comments’ until the sale is final.

But this week, he’s teased a major change could be coming to Lumen Field.

On Saturday, a fan responded to a photo that the Seahawks shared on X of their home field ahead of the 2026 season, in which they are once again near the top of talkSPORT’s power rankings.

The fan suggested it would be ‘nice’ to see a grass field installed at Lumen, and asked Khosla what he thought of the idea.

“I’d defer to people at the (Seahawks) who know better than me,” the new Seahawks owner posted on X.

“The team that got us the Super Bowl.”

With his message, Khosla seemingly opened the door to changing the surface. Seattle currently uses artificial turf.

The NFL Players Association has long called for the NFL to adopt natural grass fields league-wide, believing it to be safer.

Debates over playing surfaces were reignited during the World Cup, when all host stadiums put down FIFA-mandated grass for the tournament.

Many have since swapped that back out for artificial turf ahead of the new NFL season, but the Buffalo Bills have chosen a grass field for their new Highmark Stadium, and it’s already winning rave reviews.

The Seahawks could follow their lead, and on Monday, Khosla appeared on CNBC and reiterated his social media message.

“That’s for management to decide, not for me to decide,” he said of installing a grass field.

In 2026, the Seahawks will be out to defend their Super Bowl crown, and it appears they will do so on an artificial surface.

But moving forward, should the organization believe grass is best, new owner Khosla will back any potential change.
