NBA rumors: Young star Bucks refused to trade for Ja Morant at center of Doc Rivers drama
The Milwaukee Bucks’ decision to hold onto guard Ryan Rollins at the trade deadline has emerged as a defining moment in a season marked by internal tension and uncertainty. Multiple reports confirmed that the Bucks refused to include Rollins in any trade package for Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant, underscoring the organization’s long-term belief in the 23-year-old.
Initial reporting from ClutchPoints’ Tomer Azarly indicated Milwaukee would not discuss Rollins in negotiations for Morant, while HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto previously noted the Grizzlies had interest in a framework involving Rollins and a first-round pick. ESPN later confirmed the stance, reinforcing that the Bucks were unwilling to part with one of their top young contributors.
In a recent report, ESPN’s Shams Charania detailed the organization’s reasoning and the growing role Rollins has taken on during the season.
“Rollins, who is averaging 17.2 points, is a Most Improved Player candidate and already one of the Bucks’ best young players. When Milwaukee pursued Memphis star Ja Morant during the season, the team declined to include Rollins in any offer, believing in the 23-year-old’s potential, sources said.”
Rollins, alongside Kevin Porter Jr., has carried significant responsibility in Milwaukee’s backcourt as the team navigated injuries and inconsistency. Both guards were tasked with facilitating the offense, particularly during stretches when Giannis Antetokounmpo was unavailable.
Charania’s report also revealed deeper issues within the locker room, including frustrations voiced by Antetokounmpo earlier in the season.
“Antetokounmpo had said in January that the Bucks’ ‘chemistry’s not there. Guys are being selfish, trying to look for their own shots instead of looking for the right shot for the team. Guys trying to do it on their own.’”
Bucks’ refusal to trade Ryan Rollins for Ja Morant ties into locker room strain

Those concerns escalated into a players-only meeting as Milwaukee attempted to address internal struggles. Team sources indicated that players confronted one another in an effort to regroup, while veteran Kyle Kuzma urged Rollins and Porter not to internalize criticism from the coaching staff and to remain confident in their roles.
The situation also extended to head coach Doc Rivers, whose tenure has come under scrutiny. According to ClutchPoints’ Brett Siegel, there is growing uncertainty surrounding Rivers’ future with the franchise.
“Nothing has gone right for the Bucks in quite some time, and while Doc Rivers is certainly not to blame for all of the organization’s flaws, his 95-99 record since taking over in Milwaukee is extremely underwhelming. Not to mention, multiple sources relayed that there is a lack of confidence among several Bucks players in Rivers’ style of coaching.”
Siegel added that league observers increasingly view potential franchise-altering moves — including a possible Antetokounmpo trade — as tied to Rivers’ long-term outlook.
The Bucks (31–47) enter the final week of the regular season eliminated from postseason contention, sitting 11th in the Eastern Conference. As Milwaukee evaluates its future, the decision to retain Rollins rather than pursue a blockbuster deal for Morant reflects both a commitment to youth and the complex challenges facing the organization.
