NBA rumors: Darryn Peterson stiffing everybody but Wizards before draft opens eyes

With the NBA Draft just a few days away, Kansas guard Darryn Peterson must be feeling anxious. He is widely projected to be picked in the top three, along with BYU forward AJ Dybantsa and Duke forward Cameron Boozer. Still, Peterson cannot be too complacent.

Not when it was reported by ESPN’s Shams Charania that the high-scoring prospect has stiffed every team except for the Washington Wizards, who own the No. 1 pick.

While Peterson has every right to do so, especially in this age of athlete empowerment, making himself available to just one squad could be a red flag, possibly making him slip in the talent-laden class.

“Developments ahead of the June 23-24 NBA Draft: BYU’s AJ Dybantsa has conducted formal visits with both the Washington Wizards (No. 1) and Utah Jazz (No. 2), while Kansas’ Darryn Peterson only visited the Wizards and does not plan to grant anyone else a meeting, sources tell me and @JeremyWoo,” wrote Sharania on X.

“Both have believed in going No. 1, and now, teams in the lottery are taking note of Peterson’s decision to only give access to Washington.”

Peterson’s move could be misconstrued as arrogance or entitlement or a warning sign that he does not want to play anywhere else other than Washington.

Last year, Utah Jazz forward Ace Bailey was slammed for refusing pre-draft workouts and canceling interviews. He did not want to be in Utah, but the team still picked him at No. 5.

Peterson averaged 20.2 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 1.2 steals in his one-and-done stint at Kansas.

In the latest edition of his mock draft, ClutchPoints’ Brett Siegel still pegged Peterson going to the Jazz at No. 2.

The Wizards are already loaded in the backcourt with veteran guards Trae Young and D’Angelo Russell and up-and-comers Bub Carrington, Tre Johnson, and Sharife Cooper.
