NBA news: 2026 Finals viewership numbers make 21st-century history

The 2026 NBA Finals between the San Antonio Spurs and the New York Knicks had historic television viewership not seen since 1998. Per a release by the NBA,  the matchup was the most-watched in this century, averaging 20.6 million viewers across the five games of the series. The number only rivaled by the 1998 ‘Last Dance’ matchup between Michael Jordan’s Chicago Bulls and the Utah Jazz.

The New York Knicks’ championship-clinching Game 5 drew an average audience of 24.5 million viewers and peaked at 33 million, making it the most-watched NBA Finals Game 5 in nearly three decades. The Finals also helped deliver the NBA’s most-watched postseason since 1998 across ABC, ESPN, Amazon Prime Video, NBC, and Peacock. Additionally, the championship series produced a record Finals television share of 38.3, the highest ever recorded.

Viewership steadily climbed as the series progressed. After Games 1 and 2 drew 16.93 million and 16.43 million viewers, respectively, interest surged for Game 3, which averaged 23.8 million viewers and peaked at 26.3 million. Game three featured the attendance of United States President Donald Trump in Madison Square Garden and the Spurs’ only victory in the series, winning 115-111 in a close contest.

Game 4 followed with 20.9 million viewers, featuring the historic 29-point comeback by the Knicks. The championship-clinching Game 5 delivered the series’ largest audience. The matchup also featured two of the NBA’s most recognizable franchises, with New York seeking its first championship since 1973 and San Antonio attempting to add another title to its storied history alongside new star Victor Wembanyama.
