Morgan State adds one of Division II’s top scoring guards
Morgan State recently landed the commitment of a high-scoring guard that could bolster its chances of contention in the MEAC. The Bears have announced the commitment of guard Trey Pettigrew, who had a stellar season at Johnson C. Smith, which competes in the CIAA. Morgan State will be Pettigrew’s latest stop in his college career, where he’s shown a penchant for scoring the basketball.
A former three-star recruit, Pettigrew made his name at Fenwick High School, Eduprize High School, and Kentwood Academy. He then started his college career at Nevada, where he averaged 3.2 points and 1.6 rebounds per game. He then transferred to Eastern Michigan, where he became more of a focal point of the offense, making the starting lineup six times across 22 games.
But, he truly made a leap when he transferred to Johnson C. Smith. During the 2025-2026 season, Pettigrew averaged 17.4 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 2.8 assists as a starter throughout the entire season. He was efficient in his scoring output, at 37.8% from the field and 37.6% from three. He now looks to bring that same level of talent to the MEAC with Morgan State.
Morgan State had an intriguing season under head coach Kevin Broadus. Although they finished the season 14-16 overall, they were 10-4 in conference. They were unseated by Delaware State University in the MEAC tournament with a 75-70 overtime loss.
Pettigrew fits perfectly within Morgan State’s current lineup of talent, as he would have paired well last season with Alfred Worrell Jr., who averaged 17.4 points per game. Pettigrew unlocks a lot of potential for the Bears to continue to emerge as a contender in the MEAC and possibly win a MEAC championship and a bid to the March Madness Tournament.
