Mitch Johnson’s bold Devin Vassell praise will fire up Spurs fans

The San Antonio Spurs stood on business in Game 4 and rolled past the Oklahoma City Thunder, 103-82, at Frost Bank Center on Sunday to even up the Western Conference Finals at 2-2.

The Spurs had another strong start behind the two-way dominance of Victor Wembanyama. Unlike in Game 3, they did not lose control, leading by as much as 25 points en route to the victory.

Wembanyama had 33 points, eight rebounds, five assists, two steals, and three blocks. Devin Vassell added 13 points, six rebounds, and three steals, while De’Aaron Fox had 12 points, 10 rebounds, and five assists.

During the postgame conference, coach Mitch Johnson made sure to tip his hat to Vassell.

“He’s been phenomenal. He may be our most consistent player if you took away any stats and just watched us play,” said Johnson.

“He’s developed into a heck of a scorer in this league.”

Vassell has been impressive in his first run in the conference finals, averaging 17.0 points, 5.8 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 1.5 steals, and 1.0 blocks. He has been solid on defense as well.

The Spurs limited the Thunder to 33% shooting from the field, including 6-of-33 from the three-point line. San Antonio scored 25 points off Oklahoma City’s 20 turnovers.

In a report from the Associated Press’ Raul Dominguez, the 25-year-old Vassell credited their resolve and mindset.

“You definitely don’t want to go down 3-1 going into their house. We knew we had to respond, and that’s how you respond. You get stops. You don’t try and focus on the offensive end, you get stops, you get out of transition. You guard your yard, and that’s what we did,” said Vassell.

Game 5 returns to Paycom Center on Tuesday.
