Missouri football’s Eliah Drinkwitz gives Ahmad Hardy update after shooting injury

Missouri football coach Eliah Drinkwitz gave some pretty positive news regarding running back Ahmad Hardy, who was shot in the leg at a concert two weeks ago.

“He’s been rehabbing in our facility every morning at 9 a.m. We’re a long way away from knowing what the football side will be,” Drinkwitz said, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel.

Hardy, who rushed for 1,560 yards and 16 touchdowns in his first year with the Tigers last season, underwent surgery shortly after being shot in the upper leg at an outdoor concert in Laurel, Mississippi, 75 miles east of his hometown, Oma.

At the time, Laurel police Sgt. Macon Davis said three people of interest in connection with the shooting were in custody.

“There had been a scheduled concert there of some rappers, or maybe a couple of different rappers,” Davis told the Laurel Leader-Call. “It drew a large crowd, and then gunshots rang out at the end.”

Hardy, 20, initially attended Louisiana-Monroe, where he earned first-team All-Sun Belt and conference freshman of the year after rushing for 1,351 yards and 13 touchdowns as a true freshman. He then transferred to Missouri. Hardy was named the SEC Newcomer of the Year, a consensus All-American, and a Doak Walker Award finalist, joining Ole Miss’ Kewan Lacy and winner Jeremiyah Love of Notre Dame.

Missouri has a little over two months until its season opener vs. Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Sept. 3. The Tigers and Hardy return to his home state on Sept. 26, when they play in Starkville vs. Mississippi State. Mizzou also plays at Ole Miss on Oct. 17.
