Michigan losing guard to transfer portal after Dusty May’s exit

Many in Ann Arbor are probably still reeling from the departure of coach Dusty May. Just a few weeks after leading Michigan to the national title, May jumped to the NBA, signing with the Dallas Mavericks.

Aside from fans, players were also affected by May’s exit, particularly those he recruited to Michigan. Some might have become unsure about their situation now that May, who likely promised them his all-out support, is not around anymore.

One of them is LJ Cason, who is set to enter the transfer portal, according to One3.com’s Joe Tipton. He averaged 6.3 points, 1.6 rebounds, and 1.6 assists in 15.1 minutes off the bench in two years at Michigan. He suffered an ACL injury in February.

“Cason, a former three-star recruit, was initially committed to Florida Atlantic under May before following him to Ann Arbor,” noted Tipton.

The 20-year-old guard carved out a role with the Wolverines with his quickness, shot-making, and aggressiveness, backing up Elliot Cadeau and Trey McKenney.

Last week, Michigan tapped coach Mike Boynton to replace May, promoting him from an interim tag to a full-time role on a two-year contract.

“Due to Michigan’s recent coaching change, the transfer portal will open for a 15-day window for all Wolverines basketball players beginning July 15, five days after Boynton was officially named head coach,” wrote Tipton.

“However, every other Michigan player has already announced his intention to remain in Ann Arbor and play for Boynton, including key returners from the national championship team in Elliot Cadeau and Trey McKenney.”

Cason is the Wolverines’ first roster loss since May left Michigan.
