Mexico (1-0, 3 PTS) won their first match 2-0 against South Africa in a game that could have been 3-0 if it wasn’t for a save from the woodwork. Goalkeeper Raúl Rangel only had to make two saves on accurate shots while his team possessed the ball for 60% of the minutes. Mexico currently sit at -185 favorites to win Group A.
South Korea beat Czechia 2-1 in an opening game shocker, earning three huge points in group play as the +155 underdogs to win that match. Oh Hyeon-Gyu’s late goal in the 80th minute gave South Korea the lead after trailing 0-1 into the 60th minute of play. They’ll look to replicate their magic in what could be another thriller against Mexico.

Mexico vs. South Korea Key Injuries
Mexico: Striker Santiago Gimenez failed to appear in their opener against South Africa after notably coming into this World Cup with an ankle injury carrying over from his campaign with AC Milan. He’s available on the bench and coach Javier Aguirre could just be waiting for the perfect time to deploy him with fresh legs in a close contest. Aside from that, Mexico has been largely healthy throughout this tournament.
South Korea: Positive news on the injury front as defender Kim Tae-hyeon and midfielder Bae Jun-ho both returned to practice ahead of this matchup. Per The Korea Herald, “Bae had been sidelined since suffering an ankle injury during a friendly against Trinidad and Tobago on May 30 in Utah. Kim picked up an ankle injury of his own while training last Tuesday for the group stage match against Czechia.”

Keys to Mexico vs. South Korea Matchup
This matchup grew much more interesting following South Korea’s comeback win over Czechia, establishing themselves as a team to watch ahead of this tournament. Their plan is to advance to the Round of 32 where they know they have a chance to catch a wave of momentum, potentially already coming sooner than expected. Oh Hyeon-gyu was a sneaky player to watch behind their beloved star Son Heung-min, capitalizing on his opportunity late in the game and playing hero for his team.
However, Mexico is very stern in their defensive efforts behind reliable players like Johan Yásquez of Genoa and full backs Jesús Gallardo and Israel Reyes. They controlled the pace effectively against South Africa in winning 47 duels and 50/50 ball while not allowing any true actions for the South African counter attack. They’ll have their hands full against the speed and quick bursts of South Korea, but they should be the more fundamental squad in terms of their passing and unraveling attacks.
These two teams have somewhat of an active history against one another, facing off five times since 2012 with Mexico notching three wins and two draws. The last meeting from 2025 ended in a 2-2 draw and is a much more accurate representation of what we should expect out of this one, both teams mounting several attacks and scoring brilliant goals. Mexico’s Santiago Gimenez actually scored a goal during that last meeting, a further indicator for the importance of his availability for this one.
Mexico vs. South Korea Prediction and Pick
While Mexico looked much more dominant in their first showing against South Africa, South Korea certainly took more people by surprise with the way they aggressively moved the ball down the field and capitalized on their chances. Their chances may be more limited against this Mexican defensive front, but don’t be surprised if they managed to break through and have a number of runs on goal.
It will be interesting to see how conservative Mexico is in the center of the pitch knowing South Korea is quick on the counterattack, so we should see more passing and focus on possession of the football.
For our final prediction, I expect another stalemate where both teams match each other in energy and opportunities on goal. The under of 2.5 goals is juiced, so I’ll predict a 1-1 draw as both teams keep pace atop Group A.
Final Mexico-South Korea Prediction & Pick: DRAW (+235); UNDER 2.5 Goals (-170)
