The 2026 World Cup gets underway with Mexico taking on South Africa at the Estadio Azteca tonight, a rematch of the opening match of the 2010 tournament in Johannesburg.
Tonight’s match will see Mexico become the first team in history host a match a three different World Cups, and the game will be the first one in the tournament in Mexican soil since 1986.
Mexico will have been preparing for this match since 2023, when they were announced as co-hosts for the 23rd World Cup along side the USA and Canada, and come into the match in strong form having won six of their eight matches since the turn of the year.
The only two draws in 2026 have come against European heavyweights Portugal and Belgium in the March international break, which will go down as positive results against strong and established opposition.
Javier Aguirre’s side have enjoyed a strong few years since the disappointment of their group stage exit of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, winning the Gold Cup in 2023 and 2025 to crown themselves the reigning North American champions for their home World Cup.

South Africa have qualified for their first World Cup since they hosted the competition in back in 2010, and will be eager to upset the co-hosts in their opening match, just as Mexico spoiled their opening day party 16 years ago by scoring a late equaliser.
Hugo Broos’ side don’t head into the World Cup in strongest of form, winning just one of the five matches they’ve played since the turn of the year.
That win did come in their most recent outing, coming in a 1-0 win over a Jamaica side who disappointed themselves in failing to qualify for this summer’s competition, and come head to North America fairly quickly off the back of an Africa Cup of Nations tournament which saw an early exit in the last 16, having reached the semi finals two years prior.
Tonight’s match will be the two nations’ first meeting since their opening day meeting in 2010, and the world will be watching once again as the two nations lift the curtain on a summer of football to remember.
