Mets’ Bo Bichette just perfectly summed up dreadful start to season with embarrassing gaffe

The 2026 New York Mets are not off to the start they were hoping for, in part because of key offseason acquisition Bo Bichette. Coming into Sunday’s rubber match with the New York Yankees, Bichette had a .535 OPS, second-worst of the Mets’ everyday players. Then, in the field on Sunday, he made a defensive gaffe to match his offensive ineptitude.

With two outs in the sixth inning, Yankees centerfielder Trent Grisham skied a pop-up behind shortstop. Bichette ranged back into shallow left field, watching the ball clip the edge of his glove before hitting the grass. Anthony Volpe was running on contact, so he scored to give the Bombers a 5-1 lead.

Bichette was signed by the Mets because of his bat. His contact-first approach was part of the Toronto Blue Jays’ mantra last year, which led them to Game 7 of the World Series. Bichette’s glove has never been his calling card, but this gaffe just adds insult to injury. The 28-year-old has never posted a full-season batting average below .290. He entered the day hitting a dreadful .210.

This was not the first defensive gaffe for the Mets in the Subway Series. Rookie outfielder Carson Benge dropped a fly ball in right field on Saturday night, allowing the Yankees to score. The Amazins were able to overcome that error and win that game to split the first two matchups of the series.

The Yankees knocked Mets starter Freddy Peralta out of the game after just five innings, getting to reliever Sean Manaea. And just when Manaea thought he had gotten out of a disastrous sixth inning, Bichette dropped the ball. If the Mets come back and win, the gaffe will be long forgotten. But if the Yankees take the series in Queens, this error could live alongside Luis Castillo in Subway Series lore.
