Mets 12-game losing streak hits mark not seen since 2002
The New York Mets have lost their 12th consecutive game, falling 5-3 to the Minnesota Twins. Nolan McLean put together a great start, and Francisco Lindor hit a three-run homer, but the bullpen collapsed at the end. Devin Williams took the mound in the ninth with the score tied, but allowed two runs without recording an out, clinching another Mets loss.
“The New York Mets, who were cruising with a 3-0 lead and pitching a no-hitter at one point, wind up losing again, 5-3, to the Minnesota Twins. That is their 12th loss in a row, their longest since 2002,” Bob Nightengale of USA Today reported.
Williams walked Josh Bell and Ryan Jeffers to start the inning before Kody Clemens reached on a bunt. With the bases loaded and no one out, Luke Keaschall hit a single, and Matt Wallner walked, scoring two runs. Austin Warren came in at that point, striking out all three batters he faced.
In the bottom of the ninth, Luis Torrens, Francisco Alvarez, and Tyrone Taylor went down in order. Brett Baty secured the last hit of the game for the Mets with his fourth-inning single. While the attention goes to Williams for another disastrous outing, the offense completely shut down against Minnesota late in the game.
The Mets have not lost 12 consecutive games since 2002. That team went from 58-57 on August 9 to 58-69 on August 23. That effectively knocked them out of playoff contention, ending the season at 75-86. The 2026 Mets have plenty of runway to go, but depending on who you ask, that could be a bad thing.
The Mets will get Juan Soto back in the lineup on Wednesday. He was placed on the injured list with a calf strain before the losing streak began and is finally ready to return. Will that help snap the streak, or is unlucky number 13 waiting around the corner?
