Matt Chapman’s clutch 10th inning RBI clinches Giants’ series win vs Cubs

Matt Chapman came to the San Francisco Giants’ rescue as he helped them escape with a 2-1 road win over the Chicago Cubs in the series finale on Sunday night.

Chapman is going through the 10th season of his career in the majors, his third with the Giants. He has shined in the rotation as a standout hitter, becoming reliable in big moments of multiple contests.

His presence for San Francisco’s series finale was no different. The game went to extra innings as both teams were even at one run apiece, having been scoreless after the third inning onward.

One team had to end the drought to gift themselves the best chance of winning the contest and the series. Luckily for Giants, Chapman heeded the call in the top of the 10th inning by hitting a single to center field as he brought Jonah Cox to home plate.

How Matt Chapman, Giants played against Cubs

Matt Chapman proved to make the difference in a tight series finale, seeing the Giants stun the Cubs on the road in the three-game set.

San Francisco dominated Chicago in the series opener, cruising to an 18-3 win. The hosts bounced back with a 3-2 victory in Game 2, but the visitors responded with a great defensive performance to shut down the Cubs’ attack.

Trevor McDonald started on the mound as he lasted five innings. He struck out six batters while conceding four hits and one run. Meanwhile, Keaton Winn earned the win for his second of the season and Dylan Smith obtained his first save of the year.

San Francisco improved to a 27-39 record on the season, sitting at fourth place in the NL West Division standings. They are above the Colorado Rockies while trailing the San Diego Padres and the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The Giants will look forward to their next series, being at home. They host the Washington Nationals as Game 1 commences on June 8 at 9:45 p.m. ET.
