Martin St. Louis gives his take on why Canadiens dominate on the road

The Montreal Canadiens pulled out a dominant Game 1 win over the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday night. Montreal scored four unanswered goals to take the Carolina crowd out of the game early. And this win continues a very promising trend for Martin St. Louis and his Canadiens in these playoffs.

Montreal has been a very good team away from home this postseason. The Canadiens have won seven of their nine road playoff games this season. And this is in line with their regular-season performance. The Habs had a .585 win percentage away from home during the course of the regular season.

“I don’t think its one thing. Probably a little confidence from how the season went for us on the road,” St. Louis said of his team’s road success, via Sportsnet. “Our defensive game has evolved and improved, and it’s allowing us to be a good road team.”

The Canadiens have made up for a less-than-stellar record on home ice this postseason. At the Bell Centre, Montreal has won just two games of the six they’ve played. In the end, it hasn’t mattered to this point. Especially with how well they’ve played away from home.

Montreal may be able to turn that around in the East Final, though. They face a talented Hurricanes team that has not been able to win games in the East Final. Carolina is 1-17 in their last 18 East Final contests following Thursday’s loss.

The Canadiens have a leg up in the East Final, and are a little closer to the Stanley Cup Final. However, they will need to keep their foot on the gas pedal if they want to defeat the Canadiens. These teams are back in action on Saturday night at the Lenovo Center in Raleigh, North Carolina.
