Mariners’ Cal Raleigh snaps brutal slump after unusual method

The Seattle Mariners have not been above .500 since a March 30 win over the New York Yankees, and while there are several reasons for the slow start, a severely struggling Cal Raleigh is certainly near the top of the list. The American League MVP runner-up looks far removed from his historic 2025 campaign, as he found himself in the midst of a shocking 0-for-38 slump during Tuesday’s game against the Houston Astros.

But the Big Dumper awakened before night’s end. He smacked a single in the seventh inning to give Mariners fans everywhere some sweet relief. Raleigh finished 2-for-4 with three runs scored and one walk in a 10-2 divisional road win. He credited one of his teammates for helping him end this agonizing drought.

“Cal Raleigh, at the urging of Logan Gilbert, showered last night in full uniform to try to end his slump,” Adam Jude of The Seattle Times posted on X. “Whatever it takes.”

Superstitions are synonymous with baseball, but the fact that Raleigh followed this specific advice shows just how desperate he was to bust out of his funk. Hopefully, one unorthodox shower will be enough to jump-start the slugging catcher.

Raleigh is still slashing a measly .166/.249/.325/.573 through 157 at-bats this season, but one productive outing could be huge for a player like him. He should be swinging with some added confidence heading into the final two games of this series. The Mariners (21-22) as a whole are thrilled to be facing the Astros (16-27) after taking the first six matchups of their head-to-head battle this year.

Gilbert will probably expect a dinner from Raleigh in the near future.
