Maple Leafs rumors: Patrick Roy, Peter Laviolette enter chat in ‘interesting’ head coaching search
The Toronto Maple Leafs decided to move on from Craig Berube after a disappointing 2025-26 campaign. There was some speculation that the Maple Leafs were going to hire David Carle out of the University of Denver. That ended up not being the case.
Now, the Leafs are still looking for a coach, and two new names have entered the running as a coach, per Darren Dreger of TSN.
“The Toronto Maple Leafs coaching search is getting more interesting. Sources say Patrick Roy and Peter Laviolette are a part of this weeks stage of the interview process,” Dreger posted on X, formerly Twitter.
Patrick Roy is one of the greatest goaltenders of all time, but has not had the same success as an NHL Coach. He first stepped into coaching with the Quebec Remparts of the QMJHL. The hall of famer started there in the 2005-06 campaign and was there through the 2012-13 season, winning the Memorial Cup, while making the playoffs each season. He then got his first chance as a head coach with the Colorado Avalanche.
In his first year, 2013-14, leading them to the playoffs, but losing in the first round. After two seasons missing the playoffs, he would resign as the head coach of the team. Roy returned to the Remparts for five more seasons, winning another Memorial Cup and winning the QMJHL title in his final season. In 2023-24, Roy was hired by the New York Islanders, leading them to the playoffs. Still, he was fired during the year this past season after the Islanders were struggling.
Meanwhile, Peter Laviolette has been at multiple stops in the NHL. His first stop was with the New York Islanders for two years beginning in 2001-02, leading them to the playoffs twice. He would then move to the Carolina Hurricanes for five seasons, winning the Stanley Cup in 2006. From there, he spent five years with the Philadelphia Flyers, before six years with the Nashville Predators, leading each team to the Stanley Cup Final once.
Since then, he has spent three years with the Washington Capitals, and another two years with the New York Rangers, making is to the conference finals in 2024. Overall, he is 846-562-25-161 as a head coach with 14 playoff appearances and one Stanley Cup title.
