Maple Leafs announce Mats Sundin reunion, GM hire

The Toronto Maple Leafs have a new front office. TSN’s Chris Johnston reported Sunday that the move is official. Mats Sundin is back with the Maple Leafs organization, and John Chayka is making his return to the NHL as the general manager.

“It’s official: The #leafs are hiring Mats Sundin and John Chayka to lead their revamped front office, with the press conference at 1 p.m. tomorrow. Interesting times ahead in Toronto,” Johnston reported.

Earlier in the day, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported that the announcement would be coming soon.

No official title has been given to Sundin yet. A fan favorite, Sundin’s number 13 is retired by the Maple Leafs, and his 987 points are the most in franchise history. Chayka was most recently the GM of the Arizona Coyotes toward the end of their run. He left the organization before his contract expired and was suspended by the NHL for seeking other opportunities while under contract.

ClutchPoints will have more on this hiring as the story develops. We also have full coverage of the Lightning and Canadiens, who are about to square off in Game 7.
