Man United sign highly-rated youngster from Premier League rival in £8m deal

Manchester United have completed the signing of 18-year-old sensation Tynan Thompson from Tottenham.

Thompson has signed in an £8million deal, with Spurs adding a 15 per cent sell-on clause into his Man United contract.

talkSPORT understands that the initial fee for the teenager is worth £4m, but there is another £4m in potential add-ons, which are based on his first-team achievements.

Thompson has made the move to Manchester from London after appearing in Spurs’ first-team squad three times last term.

He was on the bench for a Carabao Cup clash with Doncaster Rovers in September, going on to make the Champions League squad.

The highly-rated winger was part of the set-up as Tottenham took on Paris Saint-Germain and Borussia Dortmund.

Thompson has been a part of the North London club’s academy since he was 12, featuring for their U18s and U21s.

Last season, he scored seven goals in the UEFA Youth League, while also making his debut for the England U18s.

But he will now depart for the next stage of his career, beginning a new step in his journey at Man United.

In their statement, United wrote: “Manchester United have agreed the signing of exciting young winger Tynan Thompson, subject to registration.

“The 18-year-old scored 13 goals and contributed six assists last season across Under-18s to Under-21s level, including seven goals in seven UEFA Youth League games. His performances earned him opportunities within Spurs’ first-team matchday squads.

“Everyone at United would like to welcome Tynan to the club and wish him the very best of luck for the future.”

Man United’s transfer business so far

Thompson has become Michael Carrick‘s fourth summer signing since being appointed as permanent manager.

The young winger is just the latest player brought to the club from one of the Red Devils’ Premier League rivals.

They have already signed Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa after triggering the midfielder’s £35m release clause.

And Carrick has also added Andrey Santos to his midfield ranks, with the Brazilian arriving from Chelsea for £50m.

Goalkeeper Karl Darlow has signed as a free agent after leaving Man United’s rivals Leeds earlier this summer.

United are also linked with West Ham winger Crysencio Summerville, but Villa, Roma and Spurs are all interested too.
