Magic make NBA history with wire-to-wire Game 1 stunner over Pistons

The Orlando Magic didn’t just steal Game 1. They also rewrote playoff history in the process. In a stunning 112-101 road victory over the top-seeded Detroit Pistons at Little Caesars Arena, Orlando became the first No. 8 seed in NBA history to lead wire-to-wire in a playoff opener.

The result handed the Magic a 1-0 series lead and extended Detroit’s postseason misery. The Pistons have now dropped 11 consecutive home playoff games dating back to 2008. Paolo Banchero set the tone with 23 points, nine rebounds, and four assists. Orlando controlled the tempo from the opening tip.

When Detroit threatened late, Franz Wagner slammed the door. He scored 11 of his 19 points in the fourth quarter. Orlando’s balance proved decisive. Desmond Bane and Wendell Carter Jr each added 17. Meanwhile, Jalen Suggs chipped in 16.

For Detroit, Cade Cunningham delivered a heroic 39-point performance. Tobias Harris contributed 17 points. However, the lack of consistent support proved costly. Now, the pressure shifts squarely onto the No. 1 seed to respond in Game 2.

Orlando’s breakthrough didn’t come out of nowhere. The Magic entered the postseason as the East’s No. 8 seed after a 45-37 campaign built on grit and defensive identity. They ranked 11th in defensive rating. Orlando also had to beat the Charlotte Hornets in their second Play-In game to qualify for the Playoffs.

Powered by Banchero and Wagner, and steadied by Bane’s 82-game durability, the team weathered midseason inconsistency before catching fire late in the regular season. The Magic won five of its final six games, which included a statement win over Detroit. That late surge carried into Game 1. Orlando’s composure and ball movement translated into one of the most shocking and historic openers in recent playoff memory.
