London Mayor issues statement on Tyson Fury vs Anthony Joshua as talks continue over venue dilemma

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has offered his public backing to make Tyson Fury vs Anthony Joshua happen in the UK.

Fury and Joshua have signed to meet in a blockbuster all-British clash after years of heavyweight rivalry in the making.

Of course, public is demand is that the two British fan favourites meet in a stadium in the UK, but there has been significant interest from organisers in staging the clash on US shores.

Saudi boxing chief Turki Alalshikh wants the showdown to suit a primetime US audience, but still wants the bout to be held at Wembley Stadium.

Talks are ongoing to make the event happen but there will be likely logistical obstacles in the way of doing so.

But now London Mayor Khan has thrown his hat into arrangements.

And he is willing to ensure that the hugely lucrative boxing event lands in the British capital, despite fears it could land in Las Vegas.

A spokesperson issued a statement on Khan’s behalf, which read: “London is the sporting capital of the world, and the Mayor is working to bring more of the world’s biggest events to the city.

“London has staged some of the biggest boxing events in recent history at Wembley Stadium, with record crowds of over 90,000 attending heavyweight contests including Anthony Joshua vs Daniel Dubois and Tyson Fury vs Dillian Whyte.

“Sadiq has made clear that London would be the perfect place to stage the long-awaited bout between Anthony Joshua vs Tyson Fury and the Mayor stands ready to support ambitions to bring the event to our capital as we build a better London for everyone.”

From the statement, it is still unclear if there is openness for the event to land overnight.

Those around Joshua have indicated that he would rather the fight land on British shores.

Joshua and Fury are two of Britain’s biggest names in sport as a whole, and will want to do battle at Wembley

The ‘Gypsy King’ recently visited America for the UFC White House card to fuel rumours that Dana White of Zuffa Boxing will be involved in the final decision.

What is needed for Fury vs Joshua to take place?

For now however, focus from the two fighters will be on making it through their respective warm-up clashes to tee up the clash.

Alalshikh and organisers will be hoping that Fury first beats Marusz Wach in Thailand on July 24.

And then Joshua will be looking to beat Kristian Prenga one day later, before the pair will then face off in the final qyarter of 2026.

It is hoped that a venue and date will be in place to announce the eventual meeting if the pair both taste victory.

But Alalshikh insists that stadium officials must give them the conditions they need to get a deal in place.

He added: “I tell you from the beginning, it depends if England give us all that we need, we want the fight here in England.

“But we want the time zone of all the world, especially in America. If they allowed us to have Wembley late in the night, we want to do it in England.

“It is about the time and viewership.”
