LIV Golf might ‘finally come to its senses’ and ‘euthanise itself’ as emergency meeting called

LIV Golf executives have reportedly been called to a meeting in New York, amid speculation that a ‘seismic’ announcement is coming.

The Saudi-funded circuit’s future has appeared uncertain after reports emerged on Tuesday night claiming that LIV was on the brink of being shut down.

Popular X account Monday Q Info alleged that a ‘bombshell announcement’ on the future of the tour is imminent.

The news has caused much speculation from fans and pundits on social media since.

And a major update from LIV Golf now appears imminent, after a several alarming details were revealed in a Telegraph report.

According to the publication, the media centre was closed on Tuesday at the Club de Golf Chapultepec – the Mexico City venue where the next LIV Golf event is taking place.

Journalists were unable to enter the press HQ ahead of this weekend’s tournament, which is due to get underway on Thursday.

The Telegraph report there was not a single executive present at the Mexican venue on Tuesday, with the league officials instead being summoned to an ’emergency summit’ in Manhattan.

The reason for the meeting remains unclear, while the newspaper has since reached out to several LIV players, who insisted it was business as usual as they continued their preparations.

One player told the Telegraph: “I’ll be honest. None of the players have heard anything.

“It’s hopefully a merger. Everyone gathers at Augusta don’t they?”

‘Lame-brained tour’

After rumours first emerged over LIV Golf’s future, Golf Channel pundit Chamblee gave his views on the potential announcement.

When asked for his thoughts by a fan, the 63-year-old wrote on X: “Given that the product was so ill-conceived and ended up being worse than anyone could have imagined.

“With shotgun starts, initially 54 holes, a team concept that was nothing but laughable and tournaments that meant and continue to mean nothing, and such a paltry number of viewers, losing billions along the way.

“Would it surprise anyone if the Saudis came to their corrupted senses and finally euthanised the whole lame-brained tour.”

What is LIV Golf?

LIV Golf was founded in 2021 before launching with its first season the following year.

The tour is financed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund and was introduced as a direct competitor to the PGA Tour.

As well as having a team format, LIV events feature no cuts and began with just 54 holes per event.

From this season, though, tournaments have consisted of four rounds after expanding to 72 holes.

A number of high-profile PGA Tour stars have defected to join LIV since its unveiling five years ago.

They included major champions Bryson DeChambeau, Jon Rahm, Phil Mickelson and Cameron Smith.

However, recent months have seen a number of players leave the league to return to the PGA Tour.

Patrick Reed departed at the start of this year in hopes of regaining his PGA Tour playing privileges.

The 2018 Masters champion has since featured on the DP World Tour, where he has already won twice in 2026, ahead of becoming eligible for a PGA Tour comeback in August.

Meanwhile, Brooks Koepka re-joined in January, with his return coming at the Farmers Insurance Open.

It marked his first PGA Tour appearance for just under four years.
