Lindy Ruff points out where Sabres failed despite Game 4 win vs. Canadiens

The Buffalo Sabres took a 3-2 victory over the Montreal Canadiens in Game 4 of their Stanley Cup Playoffs series. After winning Game 1 of the series, the Sabres dropped two straight, as coach Lindy Ruff called out their discipline.

While the Sabres took the victory, Ruff noticed there were still areas in which the team needed to improve, according to Jonathan Acosta of WGRZ in Buffalo.

“Lindy Ruff says he feels that there was some self inflicted pain tonight. Says there are going to be some calls that they’re not going to like, but in the playoffs, there are going to plays with other team selling the call. Says he talked to team about discipline last night and they failed the discipline challenge,” Acosta posted on X, formerly Twitter.

The Sabres were down at the end of the first period. The team took the early lead on a Mattias Samuelsson goal, and looked to have made it 2-0, but a goaltender interference call brought back the second goal. Alex Newhook would tie the game, and then some of the self-inflicted wounds began. While on a powerplay, Rasmus Dahlin was penalized for interference, ending the man-advantage. A penalty on Tage Thompson late in the period would allow the Canadiens to take the lead into the second frame.

Overall, the Sabres gave the Canadiens seven different powerplay opportunities, and while they were able to kill off six of them, that is a recipe for disaster normally. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen continuously bailed out the team when down a man, ending the night with 28 saves and nine of them on the powerplay.

Now, the Sabres will look to clean up the penalties and take the series lead in Game 5. The next game of the series with the Canadiens is set for Thursday night back in Buffalo.
