Lakers rumors: What LeBron James wants in contract negotiations this summer
The 2026 NBA offseason is officially here for the Los Angeles Lakers, who were swept out of the playoffs by the Oklahoma City Thunder on Monday evening. Priority number one for the Lakers this offseason will be figuring out what the future holds for LeBron James, who will enter free agency over the summer.
Recently, Dave McMenamin of ESPN reported on what James will be looking for from the Lakers when it comes to contract negotiations.
“A source familiar with James’ thinking told ESPN that the Lakers’ approach in how they show their interest in retaining him will be a factor, beyond the simple dollar amount,” reported McMenamin.
“The Lakers can’t just offer James a number. They have to offer a why behind that number,” said an agent familiar with James’ situation. “Their plan for any discount would have to be coherent.”
James has accumulated significant wealth throughout his career, and may be willing to take a discount to help out the Lakers this offseason, but it appears that he would have to be convinced of the rationale behind such a move.
“I think it’s up to the Lakers. He loves it in L.A.,” said one source.
McMenamin also listed the Denver Nuggets, Golden State Warriors, New York Knicks, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Los Angeles Clippers as teams that could make sense for James outside of the Lakers.
Overall, the Lakers’ priority has understandably shifted over the last couple of years from building around James to building around Luka Doncic, who missed this playoff run with a hamstring strain.
However, Los Angeles would certainly love to have James back in the fold–at the right price.
“Any team, including ours, would love to have LeBron James on their roster,” said general manager Rob Pelinka.
NBA free agency is slated to begin on June 30.
