Roman Anthony gets huge injury update right before Adley Rutschman’s Red Sox debut
The Boston Red Sox have been without Roman Anthony since early May after the club initially placed him on the 10-day IL with a partially torn tendon in his right ring finger. Despite that, the franchise has remained one of the hottest teams in baseball. With newly acquired catcher Adley Rutschman making his debut with the organization on Tuesday, Boston also received a positive update regarding Anthony’s recovery.
Reports indicate that the 22-year-old outfielder has increased his work swinging the bat, according to Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com. Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy claims that Anthony is nearing a rehab assignment.
“Roman Anthony has progressed to hit off a high-velocity Trajekt machine,” Cotillo reported. “He’s ‘getting closer’ to a rehab assignment, per Chad Tracy.”
The former second-round pick was transferred to the 60-day IL in late June, as the injury was seemingly not improving. But with the final stretch of the regular season underway, it appears the Red Sox could have one of their prolific prospects back in the lineup sooner, rather than later.
Anthony has flashed major potential early in his career. However, after a hot performance in the World Baseball Classic, he some what faltered early in the 2026 campaign with the Red Sox. Through 109 at-bats so far this season, Anthony has totaled 25 hits, one home run, and five RBIs, giving him a .229 batting average and .354 OBP.
Once Roman Anthony eventually returns, he’ll join a team with some new faces, including former Boston Orioles star Adley Rutschman. Rutschman steps in as Boston’s new man behind the plate and is making his debut with the club for Tuesday’s matchup against the Toronto Blue Jays.
