Lakers news: Marcus Smart drops 3 word take on LeBron James’ importance vs. Rockets

The Los Angeles Lakers opened their first-round playoff series with a 107-98 Game 1 win over the Houston Rockets on Saturday night, thanks to efficiency, ball movement, and a commendable performance from multiple contributors.

LeBron James finished with 19 points, 13 assists, eight rebounds, and two steals, orchestrating the Lakers’ attack as the primary facilitator. He handed out 10 assists in the first half, including a playoff career-high eight in the opening quarter.

With Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves sidelined, veteran guard Marcus Smart stepped into a larger playmaking role, recording 15 points, eight assists, and four 3-pointers.

Speaking after the game, Smart acknowledged the importance of James.

“He picks and chooses when to exert energy,” said Smart. “The word we using now is elevate. He elevates us.”

Los Angeles’ offense was anchored by exceptional shooting efficiency, converting 60.6% from the field compared to Houston’s 37.6%, while also limiting the Rockets to 33.3% from beyond the arc. Despite committing 21 turnovers and attempting just 66 field goals, the fewest in any NBA game over the past three seasons, the Lakers maintained control throughout.

Luke Kennard exploded for a career playoff-high 27 points, shooting a perfect 5-for-5 from three-point range and finishing 9-of-12 overall. He scored 11 points in the first quarter alone and consistently capitalized on open looks created by James’ passing. Deandre Ayton had a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds, while Rui Hachimura contributed efficient scoring, combining with Ayton to shoot 100% early in the game.

Houston, playing without Kevin Durant due to a right knee contusion, was led by Alperen Sengun (19 points), Jabari Smith Jr. (16 points, 12 rebounds), Amen Thompson (17 points), and Reed Sheppard (17 points, five 3-pointers). The Rockets outscored the Lakers 23-6 in second-chance points but bogged down due to poor shooting.

The win gives Los Angeles a 1-0 lead in the seven-game series, with Game 2 slated for Tuesday.
