Knicks’ Mitchell Robinson finger surgery update puts him on track to play NBA Finals Game 1

The New York Knicks are patiently waiting to see who they will face in the NBA Finals, but they may want as much time as they can get, especially with Mitchell Robinson’s finger injury. It was uncertain at first when Robinson would return to the floor, but it looks like he will play in Game 1, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.

“Mitchell Robinson has undergone surgery on his broken right pinky finger — and fully plans to play in the New York Knicks’ Game 1 of the NBA Finals against OKC or San Antonio next Wednesday while wearing a brace on his hand, sources tell ESPN,” Charania wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

There were questions surrounding when Mitchell injured his finger, and it was confirmed that it was during Game 4 against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

“Amidst a few videos floating around yesterday of moments where Mitchell Robinson could’ve potentially injured the pinky during Game 4, heard this morning that the injury did indeed occur during game action,” Jonathan Macri of Knicks Film Skool wrote on X.

The good news for the Knicks is that Mitchell doesn’t have to do much with his finger except pretty much rebound the ball and dunk when given the opportunity.

Robinson has been a big part of the Knicks’ postseason run and is a force in the frontcourt, backing up Karl-Anthony Towns or sharing the floor with him. If Mitchell isn’t able to go or has to play limited minutes, Ariel Hukporti will most likely step in and take some of his playing time.

Whether it’s the Knicks or the Spurs, the Knicks are going to need their big men in the Finals. The Thunder have Chet Holmgren and Isaiah Hartenstein, while the Spurs have Victor Wembanyama and Luke Kornet.

The Knicks have shown this season that they have the depth to sustain injuries across the board, which is another reason why they were so successful.
