Knicks’ Mitchell Robinson drops ‘threat’ take on Hawks’ Hack-a-Mitch strategy

The New York Knicks are just hours away from tipping off Game 3 of their first round series against the Atlanta Hawks on Thursday evening on the road. The Knicks are looking to bounce back after melting down in the fourth quarter of Game 2, allowing the Hawks to steal a road game and even up the series.

One strategy that the Hawks used in the first game of the matchup was to intentionally foul Mitchell Robinson when New York was in the bonus, making one of the worst free throw shooters in league history step up to the line

Recently, Robinson spoke on why he views Hawks head coach Quin Snyder’s use of the strategy as a compliment.

“It means they want me off the floor. They see me as a threat and s***,” said Robinson, per James L. Edwards III of The Athletic on X, formerly Twitter.

In Game 1, Robinson went 1-4 on free throws where the Hawks intentionally fouled him, and in Game 2, Mike Brown made sure to keep the big man off the floor entirely when Atlanta had an opportunity to use the same strategy.

When he has been on the floor and not on the free throw line, Robinson has wreaked havoc on the Atlanta defense, as many expected he would against the Hawks’ undersized and injured frontcourt, constantly finding his way to offensive rebounds and finishing lobs around the rim.

However, his poor percentage at the line means there will always be a limit to just how impactful Robinson can be on the floor at any given time.

In any case, the Hawks and Knicks are slated to tip off Game 3 of their series on Thursday night at 7:00 pm ET from Atlanta.
