Knicks’ Karl-Anthony Towns credits Magic Johnson for playmaking passion
The New York Knicks are peaking at the right time. At the center of it all is Karl-Anthony Towns. He has not just been a dominant interior force, but also an unlikely playmaking engine. As New York enters the final game of the 2025–26 season, Towns’ evolution into a facilitator has added a new dimension to an already dangerous offense.
He recently had a near triple-double 20-point, 11-rebound, 11-assist showcase against the Memphis Grizzlies. With that, Towns revealed the inspiration behind his passing instincts.
“That means the world to me… that’s why I wear 32,” he said, pointing to Magic Johnson as the blueprint for his playmaking mindset.
"That means the world to me. That's why I wear 32. Obviously, my dad, but Magic Johnson, I love getting playmaking going"

For a 7-footer, it’s a rare admission. Still, it perfectly captures Towns’ refusal to be boxed into a traditional role.
Under head coach Mike Brown, Towns has at times thrived as a “point center.” He has often operated from the elbow where his vision and decision-making can unlock the offense. Whether it’s finding Jalen Brunson on timely cuts or hitting shooters in stride, Towns has become a critical connector in New York’s system. Sure, his average of around 3.0 assists per game may not leap off the page. Still, his influence goes far beyond the box score. He creates spacing and opportunities that fuel the Knicks’ rhythm.
That versatility has helped power New York to a 51–28 record and the No. 3 seed in the Eastern Conference. It also earned Towns his sixth All-Star selection, fittingly held in Los Angeles, where Johnson built his legacy. As the playoffs loom, Towns’ “do-it-all” approach could be the X-factor.
