Knicks’ Jalen Brunson breaks down pivotal Game 2 steal off Victor Wembanyama
Jalen Brunson has ice in his veins, but it was his cat-like reflexes that just put the New York Knicks two wins away from an NBA championship.
Following a thrilling 105-104 victory over the San Antonio Spurs in Game 2 of the NBA Finals on Friday, the Knicks star broke down the chaotic final sequence that ultimately secured a commanding 2-0 series lead. With the game tied at 104 and under 14 seconds remaining, Brunson missed a contested mid-range jumper over the towering Victor Wembanyama. Wembanyama pulled down the defensive rebound, but his subsequent outlet pass went awry, deflecting off the back of an unsuspecting Stephon Castle.
Brunson did not hesitate. He pounced on the loose ball, drew a foul from Wembanyama, and sank the game-winning free throw with 9.5 seconds left on the clock.
“I saw he wasn’t looking so I just tried to go get it,” Brunson said after the game, describing his instincts during the frantic turnover. “Didn’t know if it was gonna go out of bounds, I just didn’t want Wemby to come and get it.”

It was a gritty, characteristic play for the All-NBA point guard on a night when his shot was not falling. Brunson struggled from the field, shooting a tough 7-for-24, but finished with 20 points, six assists, and five massive steals.
Karl-Anthony Towns anchored New York with 21 points and 13 rebounds, while Mikal Bridges chipped in 20 points of his own. Wembanyama led all scorers with 29 points, nine rebounds, and four blocks, but his late-game blunder overshadowed a furious 14-0 fourth-quarter rally by San Antonio.
The white-hot Knicks have now won 13 consecutive playoff games. As the series shifts to Madison Square Garden on Monday, Brunson and his relentless teammates hold all the momentum in their quest for the franchise’s first title since 1973.
