Knicks fans gear up for Game 4 vs. Cavs with 33rd anniversary celebration of John Starks’ dunk

The New York Knicks are on the verge of advancing to the NBA Finals for the first time since 1999 as they head into Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Finals against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Monday up 3-0 in the series. Monday also represents a major in history for the Knicks when it comes to the playoffs as it’s the 33rd anniversary of John Starks’ thunderous dunk against the Chicago Bulls.

John Starks’ memorable dunk came during Game 2 of the 1993 Eastern Conference Finals against the Chicago Bulls, and it’s a moment that is etched in Knicks history for the playoffs even if they did not win that series. The Knicks would go on to win that game to take a commanding 2-0 lead in the series, only for the Bulls to win four straight to advance to the NBA Finals for the third consecutive season.

The Bulls would then go on to defeat the Phoenix Suns to win their third straight championship. The current iteration of the Knicks is obviously hoping for a different outcome. They do have history on their side as no team has ever come back from a 3-0 deficit to win a playoff series.

This is the second straight season the Knicks have reached the Eastern Conference Finals. Last year they were defeated by the Indiana Pacers, and the fallout resulted in the organization parting ways with head coach Tom Thibodeau. Under Mike Brown, the Knicks finished with a slightly better record at 53-29, compared to the 51-31 record they had under Thibodeau last season.

But in his first season at the helm, Brown is knocking on the door of taking the Knicks farther than any coach has since Jeff Van Gundy. Van Gundy was head coach from 1996-2002, a run that included a trip to the NBA Finals, two Eastern Conference Finals appearances and four Eastern Conference Semifinal appearances.
