Kelsey Plum drops hilarious admission on ‘50-40-90’ pursuit

The Los Angeles Sparks are on a two-game win streak following their 101-95 victory against the Las Vegas Aces on Saturday, and it was Kelsey Plum who led the way with a season-high 38 points, continuing what’s been a blistering start to the season for the All-Star guard.

It was a well-rounded performance for the nine-year veteran who also tied a season-high of nine assists and grabbed four rebounds in 37 minutes. She came into the game second in the league in scoring at 24.6 points, but after the win, Plum admitted that her goals this season are more in line with the overall production rather than just scoring. There’s just been one little problem.

“My dream would be to go 50-40-90. I know that’s going to be tough. I didn’t know the free-throw’s were going to be kicking my a** right now,” Plum said.

On the season, her second with the Sparks, Kelsey Plum is shooting 56.4 percent from the field and 41.2 percent from the 3-point line. But she’s shooting 77.8 percent from the free-throw line. Her field goal percentage is a career-high and her 3-point percentage is the third highest mark in her career.

Her free-throw percentage, however, is the lowest for her career. She’s made 21 of her 27 attempts from the stripe this season though. Law of averages suggests she’ll get back over 80 percent as the year progresses. Plum has reached the 90 percent or above mark twice in her career.

The first came during her Sixth Player of the Year season in 2021 when she shot 94.4 percent. The second was during the 2023 season when she shot 91.2 percent. Plum has always been a talented scorer going back to her days in college when at the time, she set the NCAA record for most career points.

But as much as she’s known for her scoring, she actually wants to tone that down a bit as the year goes on.

“I just think I go out there and play and I’m trying to win games right now,” Plum continued. “I think we need me to score the ball a lot right now, but hopefully as the season goes on, you actually see me scoring a little bit less. Like tonight, we have six people in double figures and that’s how you win in this league.”

After Plum, Dearica Hamby and Cameron Brink finished with 16 points each, Ariel Atkins added 11 and Erica Wheeler and Rae Burrell poured in 10 points apiece. The high scoring was reflected in the number of assists the Sparks dished out.

The Sparks’ starting backcourt of Plum and Wheeler combined for 15 assists and the team as whole had 26 assists on 37 made shots. The 101 points were a season-high to this point, and in the Sparks’ three wins thus far, they’ve had their three highest points totals in 99 and 97 points respectively, coming into Saturday. For Plum, it boils down to the team simply becoming more comfortable on the court.

“Our spacing was better. I think when your spacing is better, the reads are a lot easier to make. I know there were a couple possessions in the second half I think I got a little bit too eager driving in and they did a good job of collapsing. But I think for the most part, we’re just learning,” Plum continued. “Coach’s system is unique because it’s not very structured.

“And a lot of times people run a lot of sets and stuff, but I think as every game goes along, you’re gonna see players individually and collectively feel more comfortable. And then from there, it’s just kind of like a read and react. Some games it’s you, some games it’s somebody else. That’s the beauty of it. So I just think that you’re probably seeing people starting to be more comfortable.”
