Jonathan David makes Canada history vs. Qatar at World Cup

Team Canada took a commanding 3-0 lead right before the end of the first half of their World Cup match against Qatar. It’s been an amazing showing for forward Jonathan David, as he will go down in the Canadian sports history books for his performance on Thursday.

David, who is 26 years old, recorded two goals in the first half to give Canada a big lead. His second goal came at 45+2′ after getting the rebound off a teammate’s header attempt.

That second goal is what made history for David. Reports indicate that the Juventus striker is the first Canadian man to score multiple goals in a World Cup match, according to ESPN Insights.

“Jonathan David is making his mark for Canada,” said ESPN Insights. “He is the first Canadian man to record a multi-goal game at the World Cup.”

Canada’s history in the World Cup isn’t great, as this is just the third time the country has reached soccer’s biggest stage (1986, 2022, 2026). If the team can hold on to its lead (4-0 at 65′), it will be Canada’s first-ever win in the World Cup.

The nine-year veteran has been a solid striker throughout most of his soccer career. He spent the first three years of his career with Gent in Belgium before playing for Lille in France for the next five seasons. David played the 2025-26 campaign with Juventus in Italy, where he made 20 starts with the club.

Jonathan David served as a consistent backup option for Juventus, recording six goals and four assists in his appearances with the team.
