Jon Rahm agrees £2.2million deal to save Ryder Cup future days after LIV Golf announcement

Jon Rahm and the DP World Tour have reached a deal to save the golfer’s Ryder Cup eligibility.

The Spaniard had been locked in a tense standoff with the circuit – formerly known as the European Tour – over his defection to LIV Golf.

Rahm had racked up millions in fines and suspensions after it was ruled that the DP World Tour, who run Team Europe at the Ryder Cup, had the power to impose sanctions on those who left without a conflicting event release.

Until now, the two-time major winner had been pushing back against those sanctions and refused to take a deal that eight other LIV Golfers took earlier this year.

The DP World Tour agreed that if fines were paid, LIV Golf members could continue on the breakaway circuit unopposed, as long as they play in six DP World Tour events, two of which would be pre-determined.

Rahm took issue with the last part, given other Ryder Cup players need only compete in four DP World Tour events to maintain their eligibility.

It had threatened to put the three-time Ryder Cup winner on the sidelines for the trip to Adare Manor in 2027.

However, Rahm has now confirmed to reporters at LIV Golf Virginia that the standoff is over.

He did not reveal the exact terms of the deal, although the 31-year-old said ‘concessions have been made on both sides’.

Meanwhile, the DP World Tour announced that Rahm had paid off his outstanding fines, believed to be around £2.2m.

A statement read: “The DP World Tour and Jon Rahm have come to an agreement on conditional releases to play in conflicting tournaments on LIV Golf during the remainder of its 2026 season.

“This involves payment of all outstanding fines accrued from 2024 to date, along with participation in agreed DP World Tour tournaments (outside the Majors) in the remainder of the 2026 season.”

Curious timing

The news comes days after the Saudi Public Investment Fund [PIF] announced it would no longer fund LIV Golf after the end of this season.

It is understood multiple players have contacted the PGA Tour and the DP World Tour over a route back from LIV Golf with its future now plunged into doubt.

What’s more, a big gap just opened up on Rahm’s calendar amid the chaos.

LIV Golf recently postponed their Louisiana event at the end of June, potentially paving the way for him to play the extra two DP World Tour events.

It remains to be seen where Rahm plays his golf next year – but he will be at the Ryder Cup in a huge boost to Luke Donald’s side.

Europe heavy favourites

News of Rahm’s guaranteed eligibility will only increase the odds in favour of Europe in Ireland next year.

Donald is going for a third successive victory as captain after comfortable wins in Rome and New York, despite a late American fightback at Bethpage Black.

The visitors will be led by Jim Furyk, who was confirmed as the Team USA captain for a second time, despite a disastrous defeat in Paris in 2018.

The Americans have not won on European soil since 1993.
