Blue Jays’ Kevin Gausman hits brutal low in awful start vs. Cubs

Toronto Blue Jays starter Kevin Gausman is one of the better pitchers in MLB, but he did not look like it on Friday. The veteran hurler allowed seven earned runs in the first inning of Friday’s game against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field. According to Mitch Bannon of The Athletic, Gausman walked four hitters in the inning after not walking more than three in any other game this season. Meanwhile, Jesse Rogers of ESPN reports that the seven earned runs are the most he has allowed in any inning of his big league career.

It remains to be seen if Gausman will return for the second inning.

Gausman was simply off his game. It happens to the best players. Nevertheless, this will be an outing Gausman was to move on from as soon as possible.

For now, the Blue Jays will attempt to erase the early deficit and complete the come-from-behind win on the road. That is something that will be much easier said than done as the Cubs lead 7-0 as of this story’s writing.

The 35-year-old right-handed pitcher entered the contest with a 3.41 ERA across 15 starts. He also had 86 strikeouts in 87 innings of work on the mound. Gausman’s ERA is set to drastically increase given his performance in the ball game.

The good news is that it is only one start. Gausman can bounce back in his next outing. He certainly is not the first star pitcher to endure a difficult start. The best pitchers understand what it takes to get back on track following a difficult performance.

Gausman is more than capable of bouncing back soon.
