Joe Schoen teases eye-opening Jeremiyah Love role if Giants draft Notre Dame RB
The New York Giants are sitting pretty in the NFL Draft with the No. 5 pick, and there are a number of different directions that they can go in with the pick.
The Giants could go after a pass-rusher, whether it be David Bailey or Rueben Bain Jr. Ohio State linebacker Sonny Styles and safety Caleb Downs would both be instant additions to improve New York’s defense. Buckeyes wideout Carnell Tate would be a top target for Jaxson Dart and a great running mate for Malik Nabers.
But Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love may very well be the best player available when the Giants pick at No. 5, which makes him an intriguing option to make the New York offense more explosive on the ground. On Tuesday, general manager Joe Schoen hinted that Love could have a role as more than just a running back if the Giants did draft him, via ESPN’s Jordan Raanan.
“Jeremiyah Love, with his skillset, is viewed as an offensive weapon, per Joe Schoen. Not just a RB,” Raanan reported on X, formerly Twitter. “He can he split out on third down and used in a lot of different way as.”
The Giants found some success with Cam Skattebo at running back last season, but he dealt with multiple injuries before his rookie season ended with a gruesome leg injury. Even if Skattebo is able to make it back healthy, Love’s speed and big-play ability would be a perfect complement to the physicality and toughness of the Arizona State product.
For now, it feels as if one of the defensive players is the more likely pick for the Giants at No. 5, even if they want to address running back later in the draft.
Whoever comes to the Big Apple with the No. 5 pick will be a big part of rebuilding the culture in New York under John Harbaugh and Todd Monken. Love was a big part of a winning culture at Notre Dame and would be a great addition if the Giants go in that direction at No. 5.
