Joe Burrow making LSU title team comps sets stage for Bengals’ Super Bowl urgency
The Cincinnati Bengals are currently taking part in mandatory minicamp as they gear up for the upcoming 2026 NFL season. The Bengals are looking to bounce back after three straight years of missing out on the playoffs, and they’ll need a rare healthy year out of Joe Burrow in order to do it.
Recently, Paul Dehner Jr. of The Athletic reported on Burrow’s frame of mind heading into the new season.
“Joe Burrow just compared the way he is talking and feeling about the 2026 Bengals as very similar to the way he talked and felt prior to the 2019 LSU team. Never heard him say that before a season. Burrow not messing around establishing confidence, expectations and urgency,” reported Dehner on X, formerly Twitter.
That 2019 LSU team was considered by many to be the best college football team of all time, featuring Burrow in his Heisman Trophy season, along with Bengals star wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase and Minnesota Vikings star Justin Jefferson, among many other NFL talents.
It’s unclear what specific aspects of this Bengals team generated the comparison for Burrow, but it’s clear the star quarterback has high expectations for the new season. Cincinnati did make some strides to address its much-maligned defense this offseason, which had largely been the culprit for the team’s struggles over the last few years.
However, in order to reach their ceiling, the Bengals will need a healthy year out of Burrow, which was not the case last year, as the star went down with an injury in Week 2 of the season and didn’t return until late November.
The Bengals are set to kick off their new season on September 13 at home against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
