Joakim Noah confronts Cleveland past, shares blunt LeBron James thoughts
Joakim Noah never shied away from speaking his mind, and nearly a decade after his infamous Cleveland comments, he’s leaning back into that history.
The former Chicago Bulls center returns to the city in a new episode of his NOMAD series with NBA Take-Two Media, aiming to explore what he once dismissed. That original moment, where he labeled Cleveland as “depressing,” still lingers in NBA culture, but Noah now frames it as part of a competitive journey rather than something to walk back.
“Those were the bitter words of someone who had just lost a hard-fought battle,” Noah said, adding that he does not dwell on regret and understands where those emotions came from.
Rivalry fueled the fire
Noah’s perspective ties directly to his battles with LeBron James during intense playoff matchups between the Bulls and Cleveland Cavaliers. That tension ran deep, and Noah did not sugarcoat how he felt at the time.
“I hated this guy,” he said in the NOMAD episode, per Bleacher Report. “I hated the way he looked.” Noah would continue with the hate train. “I hated everything about him. His interviews made me cringe. I ain’t like nothing about him.”
Those feelings reflected the stakes of the rivalry. Cleveland eliminated Noah’s Bulls multiple times, including a 4-1 series win early in his career and another playoff defeat years later after James returned to the Cavaliers.
Now, Noah revisits Cleveland with a different lens. The edge that once defined his comments remains part of his story, but so does the willingness to confront it.
