Jeff Bezos consortium has route to full Liverpool ownership as new clause revealed

Liverpool could have new controlling owners within a year.

The Reds had a shake-up at the top last Friday when a consortium, which included Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, purchased a minority share in the club from incumbent owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG).

Initial reports stated the consortium’s stake was around 30 per cent.

However, talkSPORT understands it is instead higher than that.

The consortium, titled 1892 Holdings and fronted by former QPR co-owner Amit Bhatia, bought a stake estimated to be 38 per cent.

It is also understood that an option for 1892 Holdings to purchase a controlling stake in Liverpool was included as part of the terms outlined in the agreement with FSG.

The option can be taken up in the next 12 months and is not controlled by FSG.

“Liverpool has always been built by thinking beyond one season and making decisions with the club’s long-term interests in mind,” FSG president Mike Gordon said upon confirming 1892 Holdings’ investment.

“That approach continues to attract interest from respected investors and business leaders around the world.

“As we considered this opportunity, it became clear that Amit and the consortium shared our long-term philosophy and appreciation for what makes Liverpool special.

“Their experience and perspective will complement the strong foundation already in place, and we look forward to working together.”

What has Liverpool won in the FSG era?

FSG purchased Liverpool in 2010 for £298million and have overseen plenty of success.

Since the 2018/19 campaign, the Reds have won an impressive eight trophies.

The silverware haul includes two Premier League titles, the FA Cup, two Carabao Cups, the Champions League, the Super Cup and the Club World Cup.

Liverpool will look to add more trophies to their collection this season as they embark on a new era led by Andoni Iraola.

Iraola was appointed as Arne Slot’s successor following the Dutchman’s axing after just two seasons.

The ex-Cherries boss has already overseen a number of key transfers, with winger Victor Munoz joining from Osasuna while defender Ronald Araujo signed from Barcelona on a season-long loan.

Liverpool commence the 2026/27 Premier League season on Sunday away at Newcastle, with kick-off scheduled for 4:30pm.
