Ivan Toney helps Al Ahli to epic 21-year first as Saudi giants win AFC Champions League Elite

Ivan Toney has won his third trophy with Al Ahli as they beat Machida Zelvia for another AFC Champions League title.

The Saudi Pro League giants scored the winner in extra time through Feras Albrikan, who found the target from close range.

Al Ahli were even down to ten men in the 68th minute when Zakaria Al Hawsawi headbutted Tete Yengi.

However, they held on to be crowned as the Champions League Elite winners for a second consecutive season with the 1-0 victory.

They are the first team to win back-to-back titles in the competition since their Saudi rivals Al Ittihad in 2005.

Toney was substituted in the final minutes of the match, and has now got his hands on another piece of silverware.

The 30-year-old, who signed from Brentford in a £40million move in 2024, scored two goals and assisted another three during their run.

He has added the 2025/26 Champions League Elite title to the victory from last season, as well as the 2025 Saudi Super Cup.

Could Toney return to the Premier League?

Speaking earlier in the year, Toney said he had ‘unfinished business’ in Saudi Arabia as he looked to add to his accolades.

He has done just that on Saturday, with the striker on 67 goals and 16 assists in 88 appearances across all competitions.

The seven-cap England star also said he wants to ‘leave a big legacy for myself, my children and my family’.

However, Toney has also left the door open for a move back to the Premier League, where he netted 36 goals in 85 matches.

“I’m settled at the moment. With me, I can change my mind very quick so I take it one step at a time.

“Who knows what could happen. I would be open to it (a Premier League return).

“But like I said, right now I’ve got unfinished business and I want to win some trophies here first before I think of anything else.

“Never say never, you never know what football brings and what’s around the corner.”

Toney was linked with a Premier League return in January, although a move was unlikely due to tax reasons.

Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham were the speculated destinations.
