Injunction allows RJ Luis Jr. to play for LSU despite 2025 two-way NBA contract

LSU basketball has received a massive eligibility boost for the 2026-27 season after a Baton Rouge judge granted RJ Luis Jr. a preliminary injunction on Monday. The ruling temporarily prevents the NCAA from enforcing its eligibility ban and allows Luis to compete for the Tigers.

Luis had challenged the NCAA after being ruled ineligible because he signed a professional two-way contract with the Utah Jazz in 2025. However, injuries prevented him from appearing in an NBA regular-season or G League game. The court also blocked the NCAA from imposing retroactive “restitution” penalties against LSU, allowing Luis to immediately join the Tigers and prepare for the upcoming season.

The 2025 Big East Player of the Year began his college career at UMass after entering the 2022 high school class. He spent one season with the Minutemen before transferring to St. John’s, where he played two seasons. Luis entered the 2025 NBA Draft, went undrafted and subsequently signed with the Jazz.

Luis did not participate in NBA Summer League because of an injury. Afterward, he was traded to the Boston Celtics and played in the preseason but never appeared in a regular-season or G League contest. The Celtics eventually waived him.

During his first three college seasons, Luis appeared in 85 games, starting 52, while averaging 14.1 points, 5.6 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.3 steals per game on 43.9% shooting. In his final season with the Red Storm in 2024-25, he averaged 18.2 points per game.

Luis now joins a LSU roster that also added former UCLA guard Donovan Dent, the 2025 Mountain West Player of the Year at New Mexico, along with transfers Divine Ugochukwu, Skyy Clark, Abdi Bashir Jr. and Mouhamed Dioubate.
