Giants announce flurry of roster moves after brutal Red Sox sweep

The San Francisco Giants announced 10 roster moves Monday after the Boston Red Sox completed a weekend sweep at Fenway Park. The 10 Giants roster moves included three IL placements, one bereavement-list placement, one option, and five recalls from Triple-A Sacramento.

The Red Sox sweep left the Giants at 52-78 and raised concern about Willy Adames’ injury. Adames hurt his left elbow during an awkward slide in Sunday’s finale. Victor Bericoto sustained a right knee bone bruise, while JT Brubaker bruised his ribs diving for a foul ball.

Matt “Tugboat” Wilkinson allowed four earned runs across 3 2/3 innings as the Red Sox pulled off a 5-4 comeback on Sunday.

Giants overhaul roster after injuries in Boston

In a Monday article, MLB Trade Rumors’ Anthony Franco detailed the roster overhaul following Boston’s sweep.

“San Francisco placed Willy Adames (left elbow sprain), JT Brubaker (bruised ribs) and Victor Bericoto (bone bruise in right knee) on the injured list. Adames and Bericoto land on the 10-day IL, while Brubaker will miss a minimum of 15 days. San Francisco also placed Bryce Eldridge on the bereavement list and optioned rookie southpaw Tugboat Wilkinson.”

Franco also identified the five recalls from the organization’s minor league affiliate:

“To fill those active roster spots, the Giants recalled five players from Triple-A Sacramento: Nate Furman, Grant McCray, Anthony Molina, Ryan Walker and Shay Whitcomb.”

Each recalled player owns major league experience. Anthony Molina and Shay Whitcomb could make their Giants debuts if either appears. Meanwhile, Nate Furman, Grant McCray, and Ryan Walker have already played for San Francisco. Altogether, the transactions reshaped nearly 20% of the active roster.

The Giants returned home Monday to open a series vs. the Cincinnati Reds with their reshuffled group. San Francisco stands fourth in the National League West and 27.5 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers. Therefore, the remaining schedule gives the organization opportunities to evaluate its Sacramento depth.
