Ilia Topuria’s injuries disclosed after face left a bloody mess in Justin Gaethje loss

Ilia Topuria came out of his UFC Freedom 250 headliner worse for wear.

The Georgian retired on his stool at the end of the fourth round after being battered from pillar to post by Justin Gaethje en route to dropping his lightweight title.

Topuria’s face was a bloody mess at the end of the bout, and he was rushed to the hospital in the immediate aftermath.

According to Spanish newspaper Marca, a CT scan subsequently determined that Topuria had suffered non-displaced fractures in both orbital bones.

He will not require surgery, but is expected to be out of action for the rest of the year.

The doctor had initially called for the fight to be stopped at the end of the third round before backtracking and allowing the action to continue.

In the dying embers of the fourth round, Gaethje landed a big knee to Topuria’s ribs, and when he returned to his corner, they waved off the fight.

Taking to social media on Monday night, Topuria revealed he had lost sight in both eyes by the second round.

“Justin, congratulations. You said you’d leave your mark on my face… and you did,” Topuria wrote.

“You took the sight from my right eye in the first round, and by the end of the second, from my left too.

“No excuses. I had one of the best camps of my life.

“I came in sharp, prepared, and ready. Last night was your night.

“That’s the nature of this game. Glory and pain walk side by side.

“I’ll heal. I’ll rest. And I’ll return stronger, wiser, and far more dangerous.

“And trust me… this story between us is far from over. We will have our rematch.”

While Topuria is hopeful of a second crack at Gaethje, it remains to be seen whether the American will compete again.

He had admitted before the bout that he could retire from MMA if he were to be crowned world champion at the third time of asking.

Pressed on whether he will fight again by Joe Rogan, Gaethje said: “I promised my mum I wouldn’t make a decision tonight.”
