Iga Swiatek gives brutally honest review of shocking Marta Kostyuk upset at French Open
The French Open has been full of upsets both in the men’s and women’s brackets, and Sunday was no different. On the women’s side, No. 15 seed Marta Kostyuk got the Round of 16 underway with a stunning upset of No. 3 seed Iga Swiatek in straight sets, 7-5, 6-1.
Swiatek has been the queen of Roland Garros in the 2020s, winning four major titles in Paris and making at least the quarterfinals in the last six editions of the tournament. That streak was snapped on Sunday with a stunning loss.
After the match, Swiatek dove into what went wrong as the match quickly slipped away from her late in the first set and into the second.

“For sure I lost control of the match. There was no way for me to come back, because I felt worse and worse. This is not like, positive,” Swiatek said. “This is different than losing to Elina (Svitolina) in Rome or to (Mirra) Andreeva in Stuttgart. It’s not great. I know that I lost because I was tense and my body couldn’t really do the proper things. But it’s not the first time as well. So yeah, just need to work on it.”
Swiatek had a lead in this match and even served for the first set at 5-4. However, she won just one of the final 10 games from that point on and had her serve broken all five times at the line.
This is the latest in a string of puzzling losses for Swiatek, who has not won a title since last July at Wimbledon. A lot of her defeats have been filled with serve woes and uncharacteristic errors from the baseline, which was also true today. She will defend a large part of her ranking at The Championships in London in about a month, so she desperately needs to find her top form before then.
Kostyuk is into her first quarterfinal at Roland Garros and is on a 16-match winning streak. She will take Svitolina on for a spot in the semifinals on Tuesday.
