Ian Rapoport highlights Rams among possible Ty Simpson landing spots
Yes, Dan Orlovsky thinks Ty Simpson is a first-round dude, and the Cardinals might trade up and prove him right. But another team is in the mix as the Los Angeles Rams have been highlighted by Ian Rapoport as a possible landing spot for Simpson, according to a post on X.
“I want to add one other wrinkle,” Rapoport said. “When Ty Simpson was trying to decide whether or not he should come out of Alabama and enter the draft, his father consulted with, among other people, Les Snead, the GM of the Rams, who told him Simpson that Ty was, in fact, a first-rounder. Could the Rams, maybe in a trade-back situation, be looking at Simpson?”
QB Ty Simpson seems to be a polarizing prospect
It’s not about whether he will get drafted. Instead, it’s about whether it’s the first or second round. The ramifications are different for different teams. But because Simpson is a quarterback, that usually draws out the best end of the draft spectrum.
And Simpson has gotten good reviews as a player, according to The Athletic.
“Simpson has the command and process of an NFL quarterback,” Dane Brugler wrote. “But he needs valuable experience to be more efficient in his reads, and to better understand what is open and what isn’t. He projects as a low-level NFL starter, with the ceiling of a mid-level starter and floor of a backup (reminiscent of Daniel Jones with lesser physical traits).
“He is generally an accurate passer who can digest defensive concepts and read out the entire field. However, he made just 15 career starts, and that lack of experience manifests in his decision-making and precision. He eliminates things quickly — but often too quickly and turns down throws about to come open.”
Simpson is considered an eventual plus starter, according to NFL.com.
“Simpson is mechanically sound from a footwork and release perspective, providing a favorable foundation to work from,” Lance Zierlein wrote. “He’s above average as a processor and decision-maker, but timing and anticipation remain works in progress. Arm talent and velocity are average, which limits his success.”
