Hurricanes receive message from dethroned Panthers after Cup win

After years of knocking on the door, the Carolina Hurricanes finally burst through and have won the Stanley Cup for the first time since 2006. They put the finishing touches on their historic victory over the Vegas Golden Knights, defeating them at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas by a 3-0 final score on Sunday evening, capturing what is now the second title in team history.

It marks the return of Lord Stanley to Raleigh for the first time since they defeated the Edmonton Oilers in seven games in the 2006 Stanley Cup Final.

The Hurricanes were twice eliminated in the Eastern Conference Final by the Florida Panthers, both in 2023 and 2025. But in a show of class, the Panthers’ official X account posted a congratulatory message to the Hurricanes after their Cup win.

“Congratulations to the Canes on tonight’s Stanley Cup victory,” read the Panthers message via X.

It was the Panthers who swept the Hurricanes from the 2023 Eastern Conference Final in four games, highlighted by Matthew Tkachuk’s game-winning goal in Game 4 of the series with just seconds remaining. In their second go-around, the Panthers took a three-game-to-none series lead before eventually dispatching the Hurricanes in five games.

After advancing three straight years to the Stanley Cup Final and winning two titles, the Panthers were hit hard by injuries this season and failed to return to the postseason. However, they’re expected to be right back in the thick of things next season if they manage to stay healthy, and there could even be another postseason series between the two clubs at some point in the future.
