Eagles insider reads tea leaves on Quinyon Mitchell, Cooper DeJean contract extensions

The Philadelphia Eagles have rebuilt their core under Nick Sirianni as they chase another Super Bowl, and they have largely done it on the defensive side of the ball. Over the last few years, the Eagles have landed a number of star players on defense in the NFL Draft.

One of those players got rewarded with big money this offseason as the Eagles made Jalen Carter the highest-paid interior defensive lineman in the NFL. Now, the attention turns to a pair of young stars in the defensive backfield: Cooper DeJean and Quinyon Mitchell.

Carter getting a new deal, along with his defensive tackle-mate Jordan Davis, means that DeJean and Mitchell. Eagles reporter Brooks Kubena from The Athletic isn’t worried about those two getting new deals when the time comes.

“Howie Roseman signed Jordan Davis and Jalen Carter to long-term deals. Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean are logically next in line,” Kubena wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “As the young defensive core is becoming more expensive, I asked how that will influence Roseman’s management of the roster going forward — particularly on offense. He answered by saying they’re foremost looking to reward great work inside their own building: If you do well, you’ll get rewarded.”

Roseman confirmed as much on Wednesday at training camp, promising Eagles fans that Philly was planning on keeping all of its stars around no matter the cost.

“We have some game-changing players and people that are part of this organization and we don’t intend to lose,” Roseman said. “So, I would say to our fans, if you’re wearing a jersey with some of those guys, with those names on the back, we fully intend for those guys to be here.”

Mitchell is already one of the best shutdown corners on the outside in all of football. That has become an even more valuable position in recent years, and it’s feeling more and more likely that the Toledo product will reset the cornerback market next offseason.

DeJean is a more versatile piece. He has spent a lot of his time in the nickel during his career, and he and Seahawks standout Nick Emmanwori have been a major part of the nickel becoming a premium position on defense. Expect DeJean to be rewarded for his success with a big deal next offseason if he can keep it rolling in 2026.
