Hurricanes’ Jordan Staal gushes with pride after Stanley Cup triumph
The Carolina Hurricanes have won the Stanley Cup, and it’s been a long time coming for captain Jordan Staal. Staal had already won a Stanley Cup in his career. However, that triumph came 17 years ago with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Now, the Hurricanes captain has won the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP, leading the Canes to their second title in franchise history.
The Hurricanes are a selfless team, though. Even when they won the Stanley Cup, you saw the selflessness in their celebrations. So it’s certainly no surprise that Staal took time to talk about those around him following Game 6 on Sunday night.
“It’s amazing,” the Hurricanes captain said after winning the Stanley Cup, via NHL.com. “What a battle, what a feeling. So many individual efforts to keep the puck out of the net. I’m so proud of these guys.”
The Hurricanes opened the scoring thanks to Taylor Hall on Sunday. He scored less than four minutes into the game to give Carolina an early advantage. The Canes would not score again until the second period, when Jackson Blake found the back of the net. Nikolaj Ehlers slotted home an empty net marker to seal the deal in the third.
Carolina is only the second non-Florida team to win the Cup in the 2020s. Ironically, the Golden Knights are the other non-Florida team to win it this decade. Next season, the Hurricanes will look to do what the Tampa Bay Lightning and Florida Panthers were able to do and successfully defend their title.
For now, though, the team is focused on this moment. Carolina has won the Cup for the first time since 2006. It’s time to celebrate a successful season and a dream come true for everyone involved in the organization.
