How Yankees OF Aaron Judge truly feels about potential MLB expansion in Sacramento

An 8-2 series-opening win over the Athletics in Sacramento Friday night extended the New York Yankees’ current winning streak to five games. At 35-22, they are a game and a half behind the Tampa Bay Rays for the AL East lead. It was a homecoming of sorts for Yankees captain Aaron Judge, who is from nearby Linden, California. After the victory, local beat reporter Kirsten Moran-Kellar shared Judge’s thoughts on potential MLB expansion into Sacramento in the future via X, formerly Twitter.

“Northern California is a great baseball town… especially here in Sacramento,” remarked Judge post-game. “A lot of good history… Hopefully, they get the bid.”

At the moment, Sacramento’s Sutter Health Park, primarily the home park for the San Francisco Giants’ Triple-A affiliate, plays host to the Athletics since their departure from Oakland. The Athletics’ new home stadium in Las Vegas is scheduled to open ahead of the 2028 season. While the A’s have improved their attendance in their second season in Sacramento, it’s still the lowest average in Major League Baseball. If Sacramento natives aren’t coming out for Athletics games, would they support their own team?

The Californian capital is one of a few cities vying for an MLB expansion franchise. Fellow West Coast cities, such as Portland and Salt Lake City, are also in the mix, as are other metropolitan areas like Charlotte and Nashville, which are reportedly under consideration. This past Thursday, a group of local business leaders and mayors officially launched Sacramento’s bid for an MLB franchise. The support of Judge, a native son, is certainly notable as well. Can the Yankees captain’s words help spark a resurgence in interest for Major League Baseball in Northern California once again?
