How Yankees can shock MLB world with trade for Red Sox’s Jarren Duran
The New York Yankees are playing well so far during the 2026 MLB season. The same cannot be said for the Boston Red Sox. Boston has endured a difficult campaign, and rumors of a possible Jarren Duran trade are beginning to swirl. The Yankees have not been mentioned as a potential suitor to acquire the outfielder from their rival, but could New York end up landing Duran in a deal?
Duran, 29, has not performed especially well in 2026. He is hitting just .213/.279/.386 across 222 plate appearances. He does have eight home runs and 10 stolen bases, however. Duran was an All-Star in 2024 and he is still an impactful ball player.
It is worth noting that Duran is under contract through 2028. The Red Sox do not have to move on from him soon. If they want to deal him away, though, Boston could receive a quality trade return. Between Duran’s contract and high ceiling, a number of teams would surely be interested in him.
Duran is capable of moving around the outfield and playing multiple positions. Cody Bellinger and Aaron Judge are handling duties in the corner outfield spots, but the Yankees could consider acquiring Duran and having him either move to center field or perhaps take over a corner outfield position and move Bellinger to center. The Yankees do have Trent Grisham on the roster, but he has struggled overall.
So, what would a potential deal look like between the Yankees and Red Sox?
Yankees’ potential trade offer for Red Sox’s Jarren Duran
Yankees acquire: OF Jarren Duran
Red Sox acquire: RHP Ben Hess, SS Kaeden Kent
The Red Sox will want a strong trade return. Hess is the Yankees’ No. 5 overall prospect and No. 3 pitching prospect. Meanwhile, Kent is the team’s No. 13 overall prospect.
Hess, 23, would be the attention-grabbing prospect in the trade. His fastball is continuing to develop while he also throws a good curveball and slider. Boston already features pitching depth, but adding a potential future star would surely appeal to them.
Kent is a 22-year-old shortstop. He features a fairly balanced skill set overall. Kent, the son of former MLB star Jeff Kent, is a player who could become a reliable infielder in the big leagues someday.
Would the Yankees be willing to surrender Hess and Kent for Duran? It would depend if they believe the outfielder can return to his 2024 caliber performance. Playing in New York with the short right field fence would only help his power numbers. Duran hit .285 to go along with an .834 OPS and 21 long balls during the ’24 campaign. He finished eighth in American League MVP voting.
As for the Red Sox, there is a chance they would want more prospects in the deal. That would be understandable. Receiving the opportunity to acquire a star prospect like Hess would surely catch their attention, though, even if it meant only adding two total prospects in the trade.
Will this deal happen?
In all reality, the chances of a Red Sox-Yankees trade happening are slim. The ball clubs rarely trade with one another. However, if the Yankees decide that they want to pursue outfield help, adding Duran would not be a bad idea. At the very least, New York could inquire about the outfielder.
It will be interesting to see if the Yankees and Red Sox end up at least discussing a Jarren Duran trade.
